ICYDK – Pumpkin Boats, Pre-Sealed Envelopes, & Coast Guard Training

The Guinness World Record for longest journey by pumpkin boat now belongs to a man from Happy Valley. 45 miles down the Columbia for Gary Kristensen of Happy Valley in his pumpkin that he grew himself, which weighed 1,200 pounds, and was called the “Punky Loafster.” What’s next for him? Psh, I’m guessing nothing; you’ve peaked, Bro. Retire!
This story is so wonderfully Portland. Because of the rain, there are some ballot envelopes that arrive already sealed. Like Mother Nature licked your envelope personally. County Election Clerks say if that happens to you, just give them a call, they’ll figure it out. Definitely don’t jump immediately to a conspiracy; we do that way too much.
And finally, a little piece of our history made it onto 60 Minutes this weekend. An episode featuring the Graveyard Of The Pacific aired last night on CNN, which is the area off our coast extending from Tillamook up to Cape Scott, where 2,000 ships have sunk, and where Coast Guard trainees get the title of Surfmen. Where boats go to die; that’s what we’re proud of.
